MANKATO — The owners of Mexican Village in Mankato announced Monday they will be closing the restaurant next month after 33 years of business.
Tom Nester, who owns the restaurant with wife Sheri, said the restaurant's final day of business will be May 15. He said they are planning to retire and move closer to their adult daughters in Florida.
"I will be 64 in a couple of weeks. We wanted to retire several years ago, but it's difficult when business is going well," Nester said.
He said he originally purchased Mexican Village in Fargo, N.D. with several partners in 1973. He said they went on to open another Mexican Village in St. Cloud in 1978. He said he sold his interest in those restaurants many years ago. The local closure will not impact the other restaurants.
Mexican Village in Mankato opened in 1981. The restaurant has operated continuously at 1630 Madison Ave for the last three decades.
Nester said they are in negotiations to lease or sell the building. He said they have no explicit plans to continue the restaurant at the current location but are open to allowing a buyer to take over operations.
He said he expects he will miss running the restaurant and interacting with his dedicated staff.
