Council delays e-cig decision

---- — MANKATO — The Mankato City Council decided to wait until Nov. 25 to make a final decision about where electronic cigarettes can be used and sold in the city.

A public hearing was scheduled for Monday night on ordinance changes regulating e-cigarettes, which use a smoke-free process to deliver vaporized nicotine to users. Earlier action by the council put e-cigarettes in the same category as traditional tobacco products in terms of licensing sales. The additional ordinance changes would have made clear that indoor no-smoking laws also apply to e-cigarettes.

The amended ordinance would also have permitted e-cigarette sales at mall kiosks after a request was made by River Hills Mall management. Council members said they wanted to postpone the public hearing, hoping the federal Food and Drug Administration will provide more information about health impacts of the relatively new product.
