MANKATO — No fire-related injuries were reported during Mankato Department of Public Safety prevention campaign tradition “Keep the wreath bright, prevent a red light,” which ended Tuesday.
The campaign, which began Nov. 22, served as a reminder of fire risks at home and at work. It featured a wreath on display at the Public Safety Center.
The goal was to keep the wreath lit with clear bulbs. Red bulbs represented preventable fires and blue bulbs represented preventable injuries that are a result from a fire.
There were two preventable fires during the 2012 “Keep the wreath bright, prevent a red light” campaign. One fire was caused by a discarded cigarette and the other fire originated in an unattended toaster oven. The total estimated loss for these two fires is $65,000.
In 2011, there were three preventable structure fires with an estimated loss of $203,000.
