Stolen car recovered 100 miles away

Investigators have no suspects at this point

MANKATO — It's not clear if the thief or thieves were looking for a joy ride, had some place they needed to be or were just cold-hearted Grinches, but the car they stole from a Mankato residence just before Christmas has been recovered.

The 1992 Crown Victoria had been started and left to warm up outside an East Liberty Street residence when it was stolen at about 6 a.m. Dec. 21. The owner told police he was warming the car up before driving to work when someone drove off with his car.

On Dec. 26 Mankato police received notice from the Ramsey County Sheriff's Department that the car had been found on a county road in Vadnais Heights, which is about 100 miles away from Mankato. There was no report of damage to the Crown Victoria, which was towed to a car lot for the owner to pick up.

There also was no evidence found that could lead investigators to a suspect, said Cmdr. Jeremy Clifton of the Mankato Department of Public Safety. He warned residents after the theft was reported  to lock their vehicles while warming them up.
