The Free Press wins awards at annual Minnesota Newspaper Association contest

BLOOMINGTON — The Free Press took several awards at the annual Minnesota Newspaper Association awards contest.

Tanner Kent took first place for arts and entertainment writing with his feature on the famed Mankato band the Gestures.

Tim Krohn took second place for investigative reporting for a series of stories on the affects of farmland drainage on the Minnesota River.  

Photographer John Cross won second place in the feature photo category with his photo of a heron on Crystal Lake.

The newspaper won second place for special sections with its 125th Commemorative Edition and the paper took second place for best use of social media.

The Free Press won third place for general excellence with judges saying “good, solid content that resonates with locals.”

The paper also won third place for “general reporting,” with the judges saying the paper “offers its subscribers well-written stories on issues important to locals.”

The paper took third place for its Opinions pages and third place for editorial writing.

The newspaper competed against other daily newspapers with circulations above 10,000 excluding the Minneapolis and St. Paul papers.

Two area reporters took top honors in the contest, winning first place for “new journalist of the year.’

The New Ulm Journal’s Josh Moniz won in the daily newspaper category whlie Waseca County News reporter Miles Trump won in the weekly newspaper category.
