Utility phone scam targets two local restaurants

MANKATO — Police are warning local businesses to be aware of a nationwide phone scam that took money from two Mankato restaurants.

Employees at the restaurants received calls from someone claiming to be working with an energy company. The caller said money was owed on the restaurants' accounts and the utilities would be shut off if they didn't immediately send a payment through a money wiring service.

People should avoid providing any financial information over the phone, said Cmdr. Dan Schisel of the Department of Public Safety. He also said area utility companies never threaten to shut off service without prior warnings through the mail and by telephone.
