MANKATO — Organizers of the second annual Dancing with the Mankato Stars hope to build on the success of the inaugural event.
The event, presented by Dance Express of Mankato to benefit the South Central Minnesota chapter of the American Red Cross, raised more than $50,000 for local programs and services last year.
Last year’s grand champion was Sara Person, most funds raised; Michelle Schoof, people’s choice award; and Tim Tupy and Kate Cox, judge’s choice winner.
This year organizers hope to raise even more money by increasing the size of the venue. The event will be Feb. 1 at the Verizon Wireless Center in Mankato.
This year's competitors and ticket sale information will be announced soon.
The competition is similar to the "Dancing with the Stars" television show.
Well-known figures from the community will be teamed up with professional dancers. The couples spend the weeks before the event practicing for the one-show event and unlike the TV show, local competitors will have different styles for the one performance each couple does.
Several contestants last year put up Facebook pages and did other promotional stunts to do some good-natured trash talking about their competitors and to drum up donations.
