---- — MANKATO — A Mankato man is among the 25 Minnesota veterans who will receive honors Sept. 11 in St. Paul.
Minnesota Army National Guard 1st Sgt. Stephen Whitehead will receive a "25 Veterans’ Voices" Award" at the Minnesota Humanities Center. Whitehead is a former coordinator for Beyond the Yellow Ribbons chapters.
Minnesotans from across the state recently nominated veterans of recent wars, including Iraq and Afghanistan, for making outstanding contributions to their communities. From a host of nominees, 25 veterans were chosen to receive honors.
Whitehead served with the Minnesota National Guard.
The Sept. 11 event launches a long-term, statewide program — Veterans’ Voices — in which the Humanities Center focuses on bringing into public life the stories and experiences of veterans to the Minnesota communities where they live and work, so that they will not remain marginalized.
More than 60,000 Minnesotans have been deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan, and there are more than 381,000 veterans of all wars residing in Minnesota.
