Update: Car and police SUV crash injures driver

MANKATO — A 27-year-old Glenwood man was seriously injured in a broadside collision with a Mankato police vehicle Monday night at the intersection of South Riverfront Drive and Hickory Street.

Steven J. Gremmels was in serious condition Tuesday afternoon at Mayo Health System in Mankato.

The State Patrol said Gremmels was driving a 2003 Subaru Legacy west on Hickory Street about 8 p.m. when the crash occurred with a 2013 Ford Explorer police vehicle.

The police SUV's driver, officer Christopher S. Arkell, 27, of Mankato, was not injured.

Arkell was responding to personal injury call, according to a city spokeswoman. Mankato Police Sgt. Justin Neumann said the vehicle's lights and sirens were activated.

Gremmels' passengers, Nicholas D. Paumen, 26, of Bloomington and Cody L. Sargent, 28, of Glenwood, were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The city-owned SUV was severely damaged.

The State Patrol is investigating the accident, which they said would take several days.
