HENDERSON — The picturesque town of Henderson has long been a waystation for a variety of fundraiser rides, and recently some local residents decided to pick up on that by taking it a step further.
“A group of us in town ride motorcycles, and we said, you know, there are no rides that start and stop in Henderson,” said LaDonna Bender, a co-organizer of the town’s inaugural Henderson Area Ride for Cancer on Sunday, June 2.
“All of us have been touched by cancer in some way,” said Bender of the group’s choice to make that disease the beneficiary of the 2 1/2-hour motorcycle and car cruise through the countryside.
Funds raised by early registration fees of $20 per driver and $10 (day of ride registrants will pay slightly more) will go to the Sibley County Relay for Life event that channels its proceeds to the American Cancer Society.
The ride will begin at 12:30 p.m. and cover a scenic 100-mile route with a scheduled stop for refreshments in Lafayette. Bender said the group hopes to attract 150-200 riders in what is expected to be an annual event.
At ride’s end, participants can partake in a taco bar at the Henderson Roadhaus and have chances to win door prizes donated by local businesses.
According to the Cancer Society, more than 1 million people are diagnosed with cancer each year in the United States, including about 28,000 in Minnesota.
