MANKATO — Old Main Village Senior Living Community will celebrate 25 years as a senior living community from 3-5 p.m. Thursday. A reception and tours of the historic property at 301 South Fifth St. will follow a formal program.
A plaque will be unveiled honoring the building's status on the National Register of Historic Sites. The first Old Main was built in 1869 as an administration center for what is now Minnesota State University. The existing building was constructed in 1922 after fire destroyed the first structure. The building was abandoned in the mid-1970s when the campus moved to the hilltop. It was purchased in the 1980s and renovated into a retirement community.
Several of the residents were former students and staff members of the college when it was on the lower campus. They will be honored at the event.
