Public Safety Center now a drop-off site for discarded medicine

MANKATO — In the past 13 months, Blue Earth County has collected and incinerated 3,400 pounds of medicine.

The program continues this year and adds a dropoff site: the Mankato Public Safety Center, at 710 S. Front St.

The medicine, accompanied by a sheriff’s deputy, is burned at Xcel Energy’s Wilmarth Power Plant in Mankato.

The medicine collection program is intended to reduce misuse of leftover medications and drinking water contamination.

Illegal drugs are accepted, but medical supplies, such as IV bags and mercury thermometers, are not.
