NORTH MANKATO — Three of four legs of a new roundabout are slated to open this week just south of an under-construction Highway 14 interchange in North Mankato.
Motorists will be able to use Pleasant View Drive (from the east), Nicollet County Road 6 (from the west) and Nicollet County Road 41 (from the south). But the interchange won’t be done until next year, so drivers won’t be able to go north.
The roundabout was initially scheduled to open Friday, but someone drove around the barricade and onto concrete that hadn’t hardened. That requires crews to remove the old concrete and replace it.
The Minnesota Department of Transportation took pictures of the tire tracks left by the motorist and turned the evidence over to North Mankato police. A damage estimate has not been compiled.
MnDOT hopes the roundabout will be open by mid-week.
As with all roundabouts, MnDOT asks motorists to obey a few simple rules.
As you approach the roundabout, look at the pavement arrows to determine which lane you should be in. Yield to pedestrians and traffic before you enter. Do not stop or pass in the roundabout, and continue on until you reach your exit.
