MANKATO — The Blue Earth County Historical Society is holding a #MedallionHunt.
In an effort to determine if its 125 followers on Twitter are paying attention, the historical society will be tweeting all its clues. The messages from @BECHShistory will begin, probably on Tuesday, with this:
I rest in the county where early settlers thought the ground was blue because of the clay. Giving the county its name. #MedallionHunt
Yes, the medallion hides somewhere in Blue Earth County, said Heather Harren, education and outreach manager. Each of the tweets will end with the "#MedallionHunt" hashtag, which mark topics on Twitter. You can click on the hashtag to see every tweet that includes it.
The historical society was given an item that will be used as the medallion, but they're not yet saying what it is. The prize for the winner, Harren said, is free admission to the historical society's museum or the Hubbard House.
The historical society regularly tweets events and updates, but they're not sure if anybody is watching.
“We know that we have a great following on Facebook,” Harren said. “We're not sure how much people respond to us on Twitter.”
Though the experiment was sullied a bit by this newspaper story — they won't know for sure if readers were led to the Twitter feed — a good response to this campaign may lead to a repeat.
“We're going to have to see how successful the campaign is,” Harren said. “If people really get into this it could be something that we do more often.”
