Occupy Mankato planning Black Friday alternative

MANKATO — The Occupy Mankato group is planning an alternative to Black Friday shopping with what it calls a “Really, Really Free Market.”

According to the group’s Facebook page, people are being encouraged to bring items to the corner of North Victory Drive and Madison Avenue (the grassy area next to McDonalds) for a no-cost swap meet.

People can bring what they can and take what they need with no buying or selling allowed.

The market will run from midnight to 5 p.m. Friday, coinciding with the kickoff of the holiday shopping season when most stores open early, many opening at midnight or earlier this year.

Occupy Mankato is one of the many groups in the nation following the Occupy Wall Street model of demonstrating against social and economic inequality and focusing on the growing difference in wealth between the wealthiest 1 percent and the rest of the population.
