Mankato Marine killed in N.C. crash

David Sandmeyer's motorcycle struck by pickup

NEWPORT, N.C., — A 21-year-old Marine from Mankato died in a truck-motorcycle collision Saturday in Newport, N.C.

David Sandmeyer died from injuries suffered when he was thrown from the motorcycle he was riding when the bike was struck  by a pickup driven by a North Carolina man Lou Cacal, 72, according to the N.C. Highway Patrol in an online article from the Jacksonville, N.C., Daily News.

Cacal was turning out of a gas station in Newport heading for his home in Bogue Pines Mobile Home Park when he collided with Sandmeyer, said Trooper Rob Melby, with the N.C. Highway Patrol. Cacal had been waiting for a funeral procession to pass by and did not see Sandmeyer approaching. Speed is not considered a factor.

A friend's facebook page said Sandmeyer had attended Loyola High School.
