SMILES recycling program chips away at old tech

SMILES Center for Independent Living's electronics recycling program has become very popular over the years. Cars often line up near the program's trailers with trunks full of electronics to be recycled.

Now going on its eighth year, the program allows people to recycle the old television in the basement, or the old computer they no longer use, for only 55 cents per pound and help fund a local organization. Last year the group added small appliance recycling to the list of items they accept, increasing the event's popularity (SMILES contracts with Green Tech for its recycling).

The money raised from the event, organized twice a year in the spring and fall, helps SMILES purchase new assistive technology devices for the center's lending library.
