Poll: Majority opposed to sports complex

When it comes to the idea of regional sports complex in Mankato, respondents to our online poll are crying foul.

Our question was: Local governments are seriously considering coming together to build a sports complex. Do you think a sports complex will add to our regional appeal?

A solid majority — 53 percent, 72 votes — went with this answer: “No. We should have better priorities than sports all the time.”

But it wasn’t a complete blowout. About 39 percent (53 votes) went with the affirmative answer: “Yes. Sports is big tourism draw, which brings money into our community. A complex like this can be a boon for the Mankato area.”

Just a handful went with this answer: “I’d be OK with this idea if they put the same effort into researching ways the arts can contribute to our community’s appeal.”

Comments at our Facebook page included:

• Brock Allore: “I’m all for it. Caswell already is busy every weekend and more diverse facilities could attract a lot of high school, colllege and even national competition.”

• Tony Hanson: “Absolutely not! How about repairing horrible roads first! And no more stupid roundabouts! How about local governments coming together to encourage better business growth in the area to create better paying jobs?”

The Free Press online poll is not scientific. Visit to weigh in on our latest question: The gay marriage bill looks like it will become law. Are you confident the will of a majority of Minnesotans has prevailed?
