ST. PAUL — Faribault County and Sibley County will receive disaster aid to assist with recovery from flash flooding and severe storms last month.

Gov. Mark Dayton declared a peacetime emergency in Minnesota for June 20 through June 26, so that the state can assist local governments in 26 counties with debris issues, damage to public infrastructure and utility distribution systems.

MANKATO — Free Press Media’s office is closed today and Friday.

Mail subscribers of The Free Press will receive Thursday edition Friday, along with Friday’s paper. Although the office is closed, calls about newspaper delivery service will be answered between 5:30 and 9:30 a.m. today and Friday. News tips may be called in to 344-6397 or 344-6385.


New executive director named at MSBA

ST. PETER — Kirk Schneidawind is the new executive director for the Minnesota School Boards Association, taking over for Bob Meeks, who retired June 30. Schneidawind, 48, of Mankato, is the sixth executive director for the association, which helps school board members with training, advocacy and a variety of financial savings programs for school boards.

Schneidawind has been with MSBA for 14 years, serving in the Governmental Relations division.

The MSBA is based in St. Peter.


Local Oustanding Educators named


A Springfield High School teacher is among the recipients of the WEM Foundation’s Outstanding Educator Award honorees.

Amanda Meyer is a biology, ecology and anatomy teacher at Springfield High School and coaches Envirothon, Junior FIRST LEGO League, Knowledge Bowl, Science Bowl and Youth Energy Summit. She is an honoree in the Academic Challenge Coach Award category. The honorees receive $15,000 awards from the WEM Foundation in recognition of their outstanding accomplishments and contributions to student achievement. The WEM Educator Awards program was created by the WEM Foundation and is administered by Synergy & Leadership Exchange in partnership with The Minnesota Service Cooperatives.
