GMG business awards banquet attendees report illness

MANKATO — The Minnesota Department of Health is investigating a possible food-borne illness associated with a Mankato business awards dinner this week.

More than 50 people who attended the Business Awards and Hall of Fame event Tuesday at the Verizon Wireless Center have become ill with symptoms such as vomiting and diarhhea, Greater Mankato Growth said Friday. More than 460 people attended the event.

Jonathan Zierdt, president and CEO of Greater Mankato Growth, said in the news release that some attendees reported they became ill later Tuesday evening and in the days since. The release was sent out to notify members about the possible connection with the event.

He also said the organization has heard from people who didn’t attend the event who have come down with similar symptoms.

State health department spokesman Doug Schultz said it was too early to know what’s causing the illness. He said symptoms point toward it being “a gastrointestinal illness and possibly food-borne.”

He said people who have these symptoms should call their doctor.
