Kraft employee dies after accident

A maintenance employee at the Kraft Inc. plant in New Ulm died Monday at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis of injuries suffered in an accident at the plant Saturday night, company officials said.

Troy Curry was injured at about 9:30 p.m. Saturday while trying to fix a mechanical problem on one of the production lines, said Cathy Pernu, senior manager of corporate and legal affairs for Kraft Foods Global Inc.

“The plant’s emergency responders offered immediate assistance until the New Ulm Medical Center emergency responders arrived with an ambulance,” Pernu said. Troy was later transferred to HCMC.

Details of the accident or the nature of his injuries were not released.

Kraft issued a statement from New Ulm plant manager Jeff Reed.

“We are profoundly saddened by the news of his death, and our prayers and concern go out to his family, especially to his wife, Kelly, and his daughters,” Reed said. “This is a tragedy for all of us, as his presence touched us all. At this time, we are focusing on supporting one another in our sorrow.”

James Honerman, media spokesman for the state OSHA office in St. Paul, said OSHA had not yet received word of the death late Monday afternoon, but said it was the kind of accident that OSHA would investigate.
