Power outage hits St. Peter area

ST PETER — St. Peter, Kasota and Cleveland were without electricity early Wednesday when the connection between a main feeder line and a substation blew.

“I talked to people who heard the boom and saw the flash,” said City Administrator Todd Prafke. The resistor blew prior to 6 a.m. at the substation near the Broadway water tower, shutting down all power for the municipal power company.

Prafke said power was out for about 20 minutes to more than an hour, depending on the location.

Crews bypassed the resistor to restore power. Prafke said the resistor will be repaired during the next couple of days.

He said city crews speculate the resistor may have been hit by lightning at an earlier date, cracking it and allowing moisture to seep in until it blew.
