MANKATO — A 22-year-old Minnesota Lake man was arrested Sunday morning after allegedly leading police officers on a high-speed chase on Riverfront Drive in Mankato.

Andrew Thomas Karels caught the attention of a Mankato police officer at about 2:15 a.m. Sunday after his vehicle crashed into a fixed object near the intersection of Hickory Street and Riverfront Drive. At least two officers began a pursuit after the vehicle left the scene of the crash and headed north, a Department of Public Safety report said.

The officers reported reaching speeds of 80 mph as the chase headed out of town toward the Highway 22 intersection. When the chase reached a curve, just past the AH Hermel Candy and Tobacco warehouse, the vehicle crashed in a farm field.

Karels was treated at the scene for minor injuries after being arrested, the report said.

Charges of fleeing police in a motor vehicle, second-degree driving while intoxicated, carrying a handgun in a vehicle, leaving the scene of a crash and driving after revocation are being requested.

Karels pleaded guilty to a drunken-driving charge in 2011 for an October 2010 arrest and again in 2012 for an October 2011 arrest.
