Fun and learning at History Fest

— Jack McGowan believes kids can have fun and learn at the same time. Just a quick look around the McGowan Farm during this weekend’s History Fest reveals hundreds of kids, and kids at heart, running from place to place having fun.

“I tell all my re-enactors, ‘Teach them something,’” McGowan said Thursday as groups of children scurried past the red flannel-clad creator of History Fest.

Kids are likely to remember, for example, how fast the speed of sound is when they get to learn how to crack a whip and break the sound barrier rather than only read about it in a book, McGowan said. Many of the activities during History Fest are centered around that idea.

The annual event draws nearly 15,000 people to the farm south of Mankato the second weekend of October.
