MANKATO — Two people were injured Monday night when a sports car they were traveling in left HIghway 66 between Mankato and Good Thunder and crashed into a tree.

Daniel Schonek, 33, of Delavan and Brian Struck, 35, of Mankato were both knocked unconscious when the 2005 Ford GT Schonek was driving crashed into a ditch near the intersection with Hickory Lane, a State Patrol report said. Schonek was traveling south at a high rate of speed when he lost control of the car in some curves, the report said.

Schonek was taken to the hospital in Mankato to be treated for back and head injuries. Struck refused medical transport, the report said. The car was a total loss.

A promotional video for the Ford GT said the car, which had a base price of about $150,000, can go from zero to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds and has a top speed of 206 mph. About 4,000 of the cars were made in 2005.
