Trash tour puts garbage under spotlight

In the master plan for trash, called the “hierarchy of waste,” each piece of household trash has a plan, a destiny. And, at least for Mankato area residents, it’s only rarely a landfill.

There have been trade-offs in the transition from landfills, though, which are often the cheapest (though obviously not the most environmentally friendly) option.

The destiny of trash has grown more complicated over the past 20 years, as Blue Earth County’s five commissioners learned Thursday during a six-hour tour of four public and private waste processing stations.

More and more types of waste are being separated for environmental and economic reasons, and the world of trash is not as simple as it once was.
