Update: Police confirm death in standoff where 15-20 shots fired at North Mankato home

NORTH MANKATO — There were 15-20 shots fired at the site of a standoff at a home in upper North Mankato at the corner of Lee Boulevard and Lor Ray Drive shortly after 2:10 p.m. Thursday.

At a short news conference late Thursday, Police confirmed one death.

At the briefing, North Mankato Police Chief Chris Boyer offered little information as to what happened, other than to confirm there was a death.

Boyer said police were called at 9:54 a.m. Thursday for a “high-risk welfare check” at 1610 Lor Ray Drive. Boyer said it was a high risk check because there were guns present.

Police decided to call in the tactical response team made up of officers from Nicollet, Blue Earth and Le Sueur counties, Boyer said.

He said shots were fired and there was a death. He said the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is conducting interviews and doing lab work at the scene and will be the agency that releases the name of the deceased at a later time.

Boyer said officials would provide more information on the events on Friday. Boyer  would not take questions at the press briefing.

For  several hours armed officers and a tactical response  team had surrounded the North Mankato home at the corner of Lee Boulevard and Lor Ray Drive (Map), apparently trying to get response from someone believed to be inside.

Just after 2 p.m. officers went inside the home and a  tactical truck appeared to be leaving. But then it swung around the property and about a minute after it had returned, the shots were fired.

Late Thursday morning North Mankato police had advised that motorists may want to avoid the intersection of Lee Boulevard and Lor Ray Drive while they do a "welfare check." No other details from authorities were immediately available.

Lee Boulevard was closed from the bottom of the hill. Lor Ray was closed at Northway Drive.
