Extreme cold shuts down Mankato schools

The Free Press

MANKATO — The kids got their wish.

Mankato Area Public Schools announced today that, because of the forecasted windchills, all schools -- both public and private -- would be closed.

Some weather sources, such as the Weather Channel, said the predicted high temperature for today won't rise above 0. And with wind gusts predicted of up to 20 mph, those two factors combine for a dangerous windchill.

So fear not, children. You won't have to make that painful walk to the bus stop and freeze your buns off today.

Some other school districts have called for two-hour  late starts, including St. Peter, Sleepy Eye and New Ulm, among others. For a full list, click here.

For more information on the school closure, call Mankato Area Public Schools' public information office at 507-387-8516.
