Running legend Samuelson to speak at Marathon

Running legend Joan Benoit Samuelson will highlight a series of speakers Oct. 20 on the eve of the third annual Mankato Marathon.



Myers Field House at Minnesota State University will be the site of daylong Marathon activities as part
of the Scheels and New Balance Sport & Health Expo.



The 3-8 p.m. Orthopaedic & Fracture Clinic Speaker Series will include presentations focusing on a topics rang­ing from running ultra marathons to gaining the mental edge to starting your own running group.



Samuelson won gold at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, the year the women’s marathon was introduced to the Olympics.



She has remained a dom­inant
figure and role model in the running world. In 1979 she won the Boston Marathon in world-record time and in 1983 she ran it again and set another world mark.



Samuelson will speak 6:30-7:30 p.m.



Other speakers:

Tom Weigt and Matt Lutz (3-3:35 p.m.) share information on running 100-mile ultra marathons.

Sam Ryder (3:30-3:55 p.m.) talks about the Minnesota Pacers team he founded that helps racers meet their goals.

Clint Counsellor, Kate Cox and Chris Schull (4-4:25 p.m.) lend their run­ning expertise to novice marathoners and half­marathoners.

Cindra Kamphoff, asso­ciate professor in Sport and Exercise Psychology at MSU (4:30-4:55 p.m.) dis­cusses what the world’s best runners say about the psychology of running.

Chris Crocker of Greater Mankato Multi Sport Club (5-5:25 p.m.) talks about how people can get running clubs started.

Orthopedic sports medicine specialist Scott Stevens (6-6:25 p.m.) looks at whether recent “advances” in distance running are supported by scientific research or are more media and market- driven.



The Mankato Marathon, a qualifying event for the Boston Marathon, is projected to attract 5,000 runners.
