If the first thing you notice about Army Spc. Jack Zimmerman are his war wounds, the second thing might be his attitude about them.
“I could lay down in bed and be sad my whole life,” he said, but jokes that feeling sorry for himself won’t cause his legs to grow back.
“I’ve always had a positive attitude,” he said. His injury hasn’t changed that.
He’s still engaging, open and talkative as he greets friends in family in Cleveland Sunday afternoon. He’s in the driveway of his childhood home, next door to the school where he captained the football team and started dating Megan, now his wife.
