Robert E. (Bob) Harris

— Robert E. (Bob) Harris

    Robert E. Harris was born on November 2, 1918 in Foreman AK to Eugene Harris and Amelia Gist Harris.  Bob grew up in Broken Bow, Oklahoma and enlisted in the US Army at age 17. Bob was stationed in Alaska, California and Germany. He served during World War II most notably on Okinawa and South Pacific Operations. He was part of the US Forces preparing for the invasion of mainland Japan. Bob also served during the Korean Conflict retiring with the rank of Sergeant. He was a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9713 Morson-Ario, Mankato.

    On July 15, 1950 he wed Belva Hlavac in New Ulm Minnesota. They moved to Mankato, MN where Bob worked as a welder at Kato Electric and Mankato Ag-lime and was then subsequently employed at Minnesota State University in Mankato, retiring in 1987 after 30 years of service. Following his retirement, Bob and Belva moved to the Brainerd, Minnesota area to be close to their daughter Sandra and her husband Walter Volk.  

     Bob enjoyed his hobbies and "tinkering" around the home doing repairs, fishing and serving several years as a Volunteer for the Foster Grandparent Program in Brainerd for ten years where he was known as "Grandpa Bob".

    Bob relocated to Mankato in 2011 and lived at Monarch Meadows Assisted Living until suffering a stroke in June 2013. Bob passed away at Luther Memorial Home in Madelia, Mn, August 14, 2013 at the age of 94.

    Bob is survived by his wife, Belva of Mankato; son, Robert (Lisa) Harris of Vernon Center; daughter, Diane (Tom) Beach  of Stanton, MI; sister, Marion Lameroux of Eden Prairie, MN; grandchildren, Heather Harris of Brainerd, MN, Ken Harris of Marshall, MN, Nathan Harris of Ghent, MN,  Cheryl (Benjamin ) Ora of Caledonian, MI, Julie (Scot) Feuerstein of Edmore,  MI, Allan Volk and  James Volk of Backus, MN; great grandchildren, Rachael Christensen of Okoboji, IA, Cora Fox of Minneapolis, MN, Regan Ora and Jack Ora both of  Caledonian, MI and James Volk Jr. of Pine River, MN.

    He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Sandra Volk of Pine River, MN; brother, Al Harris;  sisters,  Lucille, Ethel, Lina, and Mabel.

    Services to be held at Woodland Hill Memorial Chapel on August 17, 2013 at 2:00 pm. Visitation at starting at 12:00 pm prior to the service. Interment at Woodland Hills to follow the service.
