Arnold 'Chief' Wiens

Arnold 'Chief' Wiens

Arnold F. Wiens, age 97, of Mankato, died Tuesday, February 4, 2014 at Mayo Clinic Health System - Mankato.

Services will held in the spring. Mankato Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Arnold "Chief" Wiens was born in Delft, Minnesota to John J and Sarah Wiens, the third child of eight children, on January 20, 1917. Since his older brothers were reasonable and obedient sons, his mischievous behavior soon became quite a challenge to his parents. He instigated Indian war games and was given the nickname of "Chief" at a young age. This followed him the rest of his life.

Since Arnold's father was a serious farmer, he expected his sons to follow his calling; education was not the highest priority. But Arnold was determined to finish high school and graduated at the age of 20. He then worked his way through Chillicothe Business College to become a telegrapher, met his future wife, joined the army and spent the next four years in the European theater of WWII. After the war, he married Barbara McManus and spent the remainder of his working life as a Depot Manager and telegrapher of Northwestern RR in southern Minnesota.

In retirement Arnold and Barbara divided their living between Florida and Minnesota and landed at Old Main where he and his wife spent the rest of their lives. He was particularly grateful for the support of Old Main in his trip to Washington D.C. for WWII veterans. That was one of the highlights of his life and he was so grateful.

Arnold was a loving brother who had a great sense of humor and a twinkle in his eye like he knew something the rest of us did not. He was a generous Scout master, was active in his church and kept current on local and national politics. In his later years he enjoyed watching football and other sports. He loved a good laugh and conversation and enjoyed mealtime at Old Main.

Arnold is survived by his son, Roger; his sisters, Charlotte Prokop and Marcella Siegwarth. Preceding him in death are his wife, Barbara, his four brothers, Harold, Jacob, Edwin, and Ted, one sister, Blondina Friesen.
