Larry G Jones

— Larry G Jones died April 2, of complications of Alzheimer's disease in Boston, Massachusetts. He spent his life in higher education research, teaching and administration. A native of Mankato, Minnesota, he has the bachelor's degree from the University of Minnesota and a master's from Mankato State University. He was awarded a fellowship from the University of Iowa to assist in the research and development of the Iowa Study of Post High School Education. He received the PhD from the University of Iowa.

Larry is survived by his wife, Ann Howard Jones, Professor of Music at Boston University, a  sister, Radonna and her husband Jim of Edina, a brother Leigh and his wife of Berea, Kentucky, and many nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his father Ben Jones and his mother Margaret (Albertson) Jones of Mankato.

A man of many and varied interests Larry began collecting stamps and coins as scouting projects. He was fascinated by both his entire life. He received both the Eagle Scout award and the Order of the Arrow as a scout. Sports were another life-long passion. In high school, he won more letters than anyone had before him. A broken leg ended his football career in high school, but he returned to the field as head cheerleader when he was an undergraduate at the University of Minnesota.  He went with the football team to the Rose Bowl. He was an outstanding tennis player, winning many tournaments and finally coaching tennis at the collegiate level. He taught himself to play golf and became a real student of the game. He also spent his life surrounded by music.  With his wife, Ann, he traveled widely, both here and abroad, in support of her professional music making.

Larry's first position was as assistant provost at Wittenberg University (Ohio). He went from there to a curriculum consultancy and then a position as dean of the college at Midland Lutheran College (Nebraska). Next he accepted a position in the Office of Institutional Research at the University of Georgia.  When he retired from UGA in 2005, he was a faculty member in the Institute for Higher Education as senior public service associate, where he taught courses in higher education.  His professional memberships included the European Higher Education Society; the Southern Association for Institutional Research, where he was a past president; and the Association for Institutional Research (AIR). He was given the Distinguished Membership Award by AIR in 2001.

Memorial contributions can be sent to Marsh Chapel Music program at Boston University. An informal celebration of Larry's life will be held at Boston University on Friday, April 12 from 11-1 in the Thurman Room at Marsh Chapel.
