He received both the Eagle Scout award and the Order of the Arrow as a scout. Sports were another life-long passion. In high school, he won more letters than anyone had before him. He was an outstanding tennis player, winning many tournaments and finally coaching tennis at the collegiate level. He taught himself to play golf and became a real student of the game. He also spent his life surrounded by music.  With his wife, Ann, he traveled widely, both here and abroad, in support of her professional music making.

Larry's first position was as assistant provost at Wittenberg University (Ohio). He went from there to a curriculum consultancy and then a position as dean of the college at Midland Lutheran College (Nebraska). Next he accepted a position in the Office of Institutional Research at the University of Georgia.  When he retired from UGA in 2005, he was a faculty member in the Institute for Higher Education as senior public service associate, where he taught courses in higher education.  His professional memberships included the European Higher Education Society; the Southern Association for Institutional Research, where he was a past president; and the Association for Institutional Research (AIR). He was given the Distinguished Membership Award by AIR in 2001.
