James E. Baer

—  Mankato resident, James E. Baer, 81, died Wednesday, May 28, 2014 at Willows Memory Care of Keystone Community, Mankato.  Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, June 2nd, at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church in Mankato.  Interment with military honors will be at Woodland Hills Memorial Park.  Visitation will be from 2-4 p.m. on Sunday, June 1st at Woodland Hills Funeral Home and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church.

  Jim was born June 1, 1932 in New Ulm, MN to Gottlieb "Gop" and Pearl (Zeches) Baer.  He graduated from Cathedral High School in 1950 and went on to receive a Bachelor of Science and also a Master's Degree in Education from Mankato State University.  He served in the Army and Army Reserves, retiring with the rank of Major.  On October 13, 1962 he married Carol Jeanette Marschall.  She died in 1986.  He married Marcia Coonce on October 8, 1988.

  Jim taught 5th grade at Roosevelt Elementary in Mankato for 33 years.  After retirement he worked part time at Carlson Craft in the catalog division.  He enjoyed classical music, golf, traveling, watching baseball and he always liked to dress well.  He was a member of Mankato Symphony, Mankato Dance Club, Mankato Riverblenders Barbershop Chorus, MSU Alumni Association and Minnesota Public Radio.

  He is survived by his wife, Marcia; sons, Paul (Amy) Baer of Mankato and Thomas Baer of Bloomington; daughter, Christine (Tony Jones) Marben of Mankato; stepsons, Aaron Coonce of White Bear Lake and Zachariah (Stephanie Sheehan) Coonce of Austin, TX; grandchildren, Kyle and Ryan Baer, Josie and Joshua Marben; step grandchildren, Evan and Emma Coonce; sister, Genevieve Brown of Bloomington; many nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Carol; brothers, Robert, Paul and Bill; sister, Mary Hagen.
