Carl was born on April 6, 1930 to Arthur and Edna (Dressel) Nuessmeier in Le Sueur. He graduated from Le Sueur High School. He served in the Army from 1951 to 1953 and was a veteran of the Korean War, in which he served as a Staff Sergeant in the 25th Infantry Division. In addition to farming, Carl drove school bus for the Le Sueur School District for 32 years. He was an active member of Zion United Church of Christ and the VFW, for which he served in the Color Guard. He enjoyed reading, particulary military history. Carl loved animals, especially dogs, and enjoyed naming the pigs and telling humorous animal stories. He diligently recorded the day-to-day events in the life of the farm in journals for many years. The natural world of the farm and its woods and grasslands was a continual source of joy and inspiration to Carl.
