    The Reverend Marilyn Lea Kusch Gasswint, age 76 of Mankato, died on Sunday, March 9, 2014 at  Good Samaritan Society Grandview in St. Peter, MN, with her son and daughter by her bedside.

    Memorial services will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 29th at Woodland Hills Funeral Home & Crematory, 1605 Woodland Avenue, Mankato, MN 56001.

   The Reverend Tim Hinrichs of Word of Life Free Lutheran Church, Mankato will be officiating. A fellowship visitation will follow the service at South Street Saloon, 515 South Front Street, Mankato, Minnesota until 5:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Good Samaritan Society Grandview 830 North Sunrise Drive, St. Peter, MN 56082-1203.

     Marilyn was born November 25, 1937, in Omaha, NE, to Albert Carl Kusch and Nellie May Terkelsen. Marilyn Lea Kusch married Charles David Gasswint, Jr. in Iowa City, IA. Marilyn graduated from the University of Kansas, Lawrence, KS in 1963; Masters' of Divinity, Duke University Divinity School, Durham, NC, in 1981; Ordained, White Rock Baptist Church, Durham, NC, in 1981; Resident serving as a Chaplain to the Heart Team in Clinical Pastoral Education, Duke University Medical Center, Durham, NC, from 1983-1984; Assistant to the Pastor at St. John's Baptist Church, Mason City, IA, from 1985-1986; Instructor, Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, Wake Forest, NC, from 1983-1984, 1986-1988; Director of Members' Services, Methodist Retirement Home, Durham, NC, from 1988-1994; Senior Chaplain, North Carolina Correctional Institution for Women, Raleigh, NC, from 1989-2000 due to retirement; Counselor, Raleigh Rescue Mission, Raleigh, NC, from 2002-2005; Chaplain, Presbyterian Ministry, Raleigh Correction Center for Women, Raleigh, NC, from 2005-2007 and Counselor, Federal Correction Center for Women, Waseca, MN, from 2009-2010.

    Marilyn enjoyed volunteering, cooking and baking, gardening, cross-stitching, gospel music and theater. She was a Member of the Ministers Council, American Baptist Churches of the South; Member of the Prison Ministry Committee, General Baptist State Convention; Board Member, Beacon Haven Ministries and Board Member, North Carolina Correction Institute for Women- Mothers And Their Children (MATCH). She was devoted to the inmates she served and felt they were often victims. In addition of the love of ministry, she was a devoted friend, daughter, mother and grandmother.

    In 2007, Marilyn and her daughter Karen moved to Mankato, MN for Karen to take care of her father Charles who died October 5, 2011. Though divorced, Marilyn and Charles were lifelong friends. While living in Mankato, it was Marilyn's desire to continue an aftercare ministry with inmates and served as the Chaplain at the Federal Correctional Center for Women in Waseca, MN. There she organized volunteering from Mankato and surrounding areas for those to work directly with the inmates.

   She is survived by her daughter, Karen Kay Gasswint of Mankato, MN and Clear Lake, IA and son, Devin Charles (Amy) Gasswint of Madison Lake, MN; grandchildren, Carson Paul, Taylor Marie and Mya Kay Gasswint all of Madison Lake, MN and cousins, Donald (Cindi) Kroll of Winnie, TX, and Chuck (Marjorie) Kroll of Tomball, TX.

     She was preceded in death by her parents and Charles David Gasswint, Jr.
