Delmar 'Del' Jerry Klundt

—  Delmar 'Del' Jerry Klundt passed away at his home in Las Vegas, NV. February 1, 2014, at the age of 75 after fighting a courageous battle against cancer and diabetes. He was born May 7, 1938, in Burke, South Dakota to Louise and Leon Klundt.

 He grew up on a farm SW of Herrick, South Dakota and attended a rural school in that area. After graduating from high school at Burke, SD, in 1956, he continued his education with four years of college at Southern State Teacher's College at Springfield, SD, with majors in Mathematics, English and a minor in Physical Science. While in college he served in the South Dakota National Guard and was discharged in 1963. It was also during this time he met his future wife, Jane. Between his junior and senior years of college and after graduation he worked summers for the U.S. Forest Service in St. Regis, MT. He worked as a firefighter and general forest service duties. His second summer was spent on a 50 foot lookout tower with Jane, shortly after they were married in 1961. He then moved to Missoula, MT, and graduated with a Mater's degree in Education Administration from the University of Montana. Their adventure continued on to Olds, Alberta in Canada where Del taught secondary math. They moved to Spring Grove, MN, where he was the elementary principal and from there to Montgomery, MN, as elementary principal. He continued his education and Mankato State University in Mankato, MN where he graduated with a Specialist degree in Education Administration. He then accepted the position of Superintendent of Schools in Cleveland, MN. He was selected to serve in the prestigious Bush Public Schools Executive Fellows Program. Del spent a total of 33 years in education, 26 of which were in Administration.

 After retiring from school administration he moved to Winnemucca, NV, then Brookings, SD, where Del worked as the finance manager for the city of Aurora, SD, for seven years before retiring in Las Vegas, NV.

 Del was an active member in the communities where he resided, and served in various organizations including a life member of the National Education Association, National Association of Elementary School Principals, Minnesota and American Associations of School Administrators, MASA Board of Directors representing Region IV, Minnesota Valley Education District Board of Directors, President of the Cleveland American Legion Club, President of Montgomery JC's, and Board of Directors at Shoreland County Club in St. Peter, MN.

 Del enjoyed playing golf and softball and watching all sports, especially the Chicago Cubs and talking about his grandchildren.

 He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Jane; two sons, Mark (Vicki) Allendale, Michigan, and Michael (Tiesha) Palmdale, California; five grandchildren; Cameron, Kayla, Alyssa, Michaela, and Tanner; a brother, David Klundt and his wife, Sharon, of Mt. Vernon, SD, and a sister, Mavis Potter and her husband, Jim, of Sturgis, SD. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

 He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother Lyle Klundt and a sister Alice Baker.

 On February 5, a mass at Holy Family Catholic Church is Las Vegas, NV, was held for family members. Services will be held at Kotrba funeral home in Gregory, SD at 11:00 on May 24th, followed by internment at the Herrick Cemetery.
