Richard Sizer

—    Richard Sizer, age 89, lifelong resident of St. James, died on Tuesday, September 17, 2013, at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in St. Cloud.

  Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30am, Thursday, September 26, 2013, at St. James Catholic Church in St. James with Father Thien Nguyen as celebrant.

  Visitation will be one hour before services at the church on Thursday.

  Burial with military honors,  provided by the St. James Veterans Honor Guard, will be at Calvary Cemetery in St. James.

  Richard Joseph Sizer was born on September 10, 1924, the only child of Joseph and Lucy (Starkey) Sizer. Richard grew up on the Sizer Farm two miles west of St. James. He attended St. James Catholic School for 8 years and graduated from St. James High School in 1942. He attended college at St. Mary's College in Winona for one year before enlisting in the Navy. Dick served in the South Pacific in the Seabees from the fall of 1943 until the

end of the war. He returned stateside on December 10, 1945, worked as a crane operator at the San Diego Naval Repair Base until April 1946. On February 21, 1947, Richard married Florence Huff in Grand Rapids, MI. He worked on the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad for over 40 years as a Conductor/Trainman retiring in 1989.

   Richard was active in many organizations; he was a Life Member of the VFW Post 1914, joining on 1944, served as Post Commander four terms, a Life Member of American Legion Post 33 serving as Post Adjutant since 1993 and a Life Member of Knight of Columbus Council #3427, he also belonged to the Retire Rail Assoc.  Dick enjoyed life; his hobbies included golfing, hunting, bowling and playing cards. He also was a participant in the 12-step recovery program since 1988. He tried to help others within and outside the program experience sobriety.

   Richard is survived by his children; Jill Sizer of Minneapolis, Mark and Lois Sizer of Waite Park, Amy & Phil Knuth of Fountain Hills, AZ, Beth Forsyth of St. James, John and Anna Sizer of Eau Claire, WI, Joe and Libby Sizer of Pacific Grove, CA, lifelong friend and ex-wife Florence Sizer of St. James and other relative and friends.
