Betty Paterson, age 83, died at the Mayo Clinic Health System-Mankato, Monday, April 15, 2013.

  Betty was born March 4, 1930 in Rochester, MN to Fred and Eileen (King) Zimmerman. Betty graduated from the College of St. Benedict in 1953. She was an English teacher and taught in Sleepy Eye, Winnebago and Rochester. She later worked for the Mankato school district in the Media Center until she retired in 1995.

  Betty married Neil Paterson in 1957; they later divorced. She was a member of St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church. Betty is survived by her 5 children. Ann (Jim) Anderson of Madison Lake, Dave Paterson of Madison Lake, Jeanne (Tony) Huggins of Mankato, Bonnie (Kirby) Thompson of Mankato and Kip (Nicole) Paterson of Lakeville; along with 13 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents.

  Betty was a beloved mother and grandmother. You could talk to her about anything. She was a passionate fan of the theater. She actively participated in several theater productions at the College of St. Benedict. In Mankato, she directed, acted, and did costume design for the Mankato Community Theater. She played the piano and was a lover of musicals and the silver screen. She loved arts and crafts, and creating things. She crocheted sweaters and blankets and made stuffed animals and Christmas stockings for her grandchildren. She loved the time she spent travelling in Europe. She had a sharp wit that always made you laugh. She enjoyed cooking and lived for family gatherings. She was a true matriarch that kept her family close together. She will be dearly missed by all.

  A visitation is scheduled from 5-8 in the evening on Thursday, April 18 at Woodland Hills Funeral Home. Visitation will continue at 9:30 am on Friday, April 19 at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church.
