Gertrude Stiehm

  Gertrude Stiehm, 87, of Gibbon died Saturday, January 4, 2014 at the Winthrop Good Samaritan Home in Winthrop. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, January 9, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Gibbon with Pastor Michael Gorte officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the time of service at the church on Thursday. The Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in Gibbon is in charge of arrangements.  Gertrude is survived by her daughter, Diane Opitz of Gaylord; son and daughter-in-law, Harold and Linda Stiehm of Mankato; daughter-in-law, Bernice Stiehm of North Mankato; eight grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren; and by special family friend, Marlene Uecker of Gaylord.

 She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Arthur Stiehm in June of 1969; son, Lloyd Stiehm; son-in-law, Earl Opitz; sisters, Frieda Quast, Esther Becker, Selma Peetsch; and by a brother, Alfred Otto.

 Gertrude Ida Otto was born on July 12, 1926 in Dryden Township, Sibley County, to Albert and Selma (Hedrich) Otto. She attended the District #44 school in rural Winthrop. On January 22, 1942, Gertrude was united in marriage to Arthur Stiehm at the Immanuel Lutheran Church parsonage in Gibbon. For twenty-five years, Gertrude worked as a seamstress at Fingerhut and then Wiman Manufacturing, both in Gaylord. Gertrude enjoyed many activities including baking, gardening, sewing, and attending garage sales. She especially enjoyed smiling and laughing, of which hers were infectious, and spending time with her family. Gertrude was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Gibbon and the Ladies Guild at church. Memorials are preferred to the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Gibbon or to the New Ulm Hospice.
