Jeanille H. Shipman, age 91, resident of Dow Rummel Village, Sioux Falls, SD, formerly of Mankato, MN, died March 5, 2014, in Sioux Falls.
Dorothy Jeanille Hadden Shipman, daughter of Arthur Edward Hadden and Jennie Taylor Hadden, was born on December 16, 1922 in Rentz, GA. She was raised in Rentz and graduated from Dublin High School in Dublin, GA in June 1940. She attended the Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville, GA where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics in June, 1944. She was the first woman from her family to attend college.
On November 2, 1944, Jeanille married Robert Oliver Shipman, of Darien, CT, at the Baptist Church in Rentz. Robert was a captain in the U.S. Army stationed at Camp Wheeler near Macon, GA during WWII. His career as a newspaper man, public relations executive, and college professor took them to places such as New York City; Boston, MA; State College, PA; Elsah, IL; Stamford and Darien, CT; Medfield, MA; and Mankato, MN. From time to time in the early years of their marriage Jeanille worked outside her home as a bookkeeper and secretary, but her main role was as wife and mother. Her constant and loving support was the cornerstone of their lives together. They were married for 52 years until Robert's death in 1996. From this marriage four children were born, Robert Hadden, Virginia Anne, Gary Oliver, and Bertram Francis Shipman ll.
Jeanille was an avid reader and gardener. She loved caring for animals of all types, especially her backyard birds. Her dedication to, and support of, her family and friends were an inspiration to all who knew her.
Jeanille is survived by her children Anne Shipman Brennan (Brian) of Sioux Falls, SD; Gary O. Shipman (Sean) of Midlothian, VA; Bertram F. Shipman II and his partner, Kimberley Scales of Raleigh, NC; daughter-in-law Mary Ann Shea Shipman of Huntington, MA; seven grandchildren; three step grandchildren; one great grandchild; three step great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband; one son, Robert Hadden Shipman; her brother, Arthur Oswald Hadden; her sister, Virginia (in infancy); and one nephew, Grady Smith Hadden.
A family memorial will be scheduled on the East Coast. Expressions of sympathy may be made in Mrs. Shipmans memory to The Robert and Jeanille Shipman Mass Communications Scholarship at Minnesota State University, Mankato, in Mankato, Minnesota.
