Roberta Doris (Tait) Wittmers

— Roberta Doris (Tait) Wittmers, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 3, 2013.  She recently celebrated her 93rd birthday with her family.

A memorial service will celebrate her life on Sunday, April 14th at 2:00 pm.  The service will be held at Belgrade Avenue United Methodist Church in North Mankato, with the Rev. Dan Horn officiating.  There will be time to visit with the family at a reception luncheon following the service.  Private interment will be at Woodland Hills prior to the service.

Doris was born March 5, 1920, in Mankato to Robert and Anna (Lilie) Tait.  She married Robert John Wittmers on May 12, 1944.

She loved and excelled in music and academics throughout school and graduated at the top of her class from Mankato High School in 1938. Prior to her marriage she worked at Kresge's.

After her husband's return from WWII, they built a home in North Mankato where they lived for 55 years, and lovingly raised their three children.  Besides creating a comfortable home, Doris spent many hours volunteering at Belgrade Avenue United Methodist Church. She served on numerous committees, taught Sunday School, was active in women's ministries, and sang in the choir until she was 80 years old.  She devoted many hours delivering Meals-On-Wheels and playing the piano on visits to area nursing homes.

Her greatest joy was her family, and she loved to play the piano, travel, read, crochet, and play cards.  She and her husband especially enjoyed their beautiful rose garden.  Doris had many wonderful friends and was loved by all who knew her.  She spent the last 7 years at Oak Terrace Assisted Living, and the friends she made there were very special to her.

She was preceded in death by her husband Robert in 2007, and will be remembered with love by her children, Judith (John) Akemann, Patricia (Greg) Elke, Robert (Dianna) Wittmers; grandchildren Dana and Noel Akemann, Brittany (Tim) Stuhr, Christopher Elke, Ryan (Amanda) Elke; great-grandchildren Madison and Tait Akemann.  Doris will be greatly missed by all of her family and friends.
