Longtime Mankato resident, Verna M. Evans, passed away Wednesday, April 17, 2013 at Laurels Peak in Mankato. Memorial services will be held 2:00 p.m. Monday, April 22, 2013 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Mankato. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Internment will be in Woodland Hills Columbarium.
Verna was born January 20, 1919 in Good Thunder, MN to Herman and Amanda (Zuehlke) Speck. On January 20, 1941, Verna married Hugh D. Evans at St. Johns Lutheran Church in Good Thunder. While Hugh served in World War II, they lived in California and Georgia. During Hugh's service abroad Verna lived in Chicago where she worked for Baxter Laboratories. After the war they moved back to Mankato where Verna was employed for 38 years with Sears. Verna and Hugh traveled extensively throughout the United States and enjoyed spending time with family and friends. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and the Ladies VFW Auxiliary Post 950. She loved joining in on social activities and was very lucky at BINGO.
Verna is survived by one sister-in-law, Emma Speck of Good Thunder, several nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews. Special mention to nieces and nephews Nancy and Jim Bellig and Roxy Bohlen and Wayne Schultz for being devoted companions and caregivers. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Hugh, two brothers and three sisters.
