Hip served in the U.S. Army as a radio T/T Operator with the highest clearance a solder can have in France for his tour. Among many trades, Hippie was a Master wood craftsman and said that he had carved "many a forrest" in his days.

Hippie is survived by his daughter, Shammarie Cummines; his three grandchildren, Sheryl, Tammy, and Andrew; and his two brothers, Edward (Janet) Patterson, of Delavan, and Dale (Susie) Patterson, of Dassel; and his very good friends, Calvin (Marcella) Johnson and Randy and Jane Clites.
