Phyllis Irene Jenkins


— Phyllis Irene Jenkins, age 83, passed away peacefully Sunday, July 28th, 2013, surrounded by family at Jenkins Living Center in Watertown, SD.

 Preceded in death by loving husband of 54 years Joel F. Jenkins, sons Joel M. Jenkins and John G. Jenkins, parents Edward and Fredrica Newman, brothers Jack and Edward Newman, and sisters Doris (Patterson) and Marian (Sharp).

 Phyllis was born in Madelia, MN, on November 24th, 1929. She spent most of her childhood growing up on a farm outside of town. After graduating from Madelia High School and further education at Mankato State University, Phyllis got a job teaching second graders in Fairfax, MN, where she worked until she married Joel F. Jenkins on May 31, 1952. After she was married, Phyllis stopped teaching and became a homemaker, dedicating her life to her husband, children, and grandchildren. Phyllis and her husband Joel raised their children in Mankato, MN, and later moved back to Madelia, MN, where they both worked various jobs until retirement. Phyllis' favorite past-times were browsing for books at the library, reading, walking, and spending time with her grandchildren. Phyllis was a sweet, kind, gracious, and generous person with a smile and kind word for everyone.

 Survived by daughter Patricia Fox, son Edward Jenkins, daughter in-law Melissa Jenkins, 6 grandchildren: Lisa and Joseph Jenkins, Elizabeth (Jordan) Rieffenberger, Alexandra and Abigail Fox, Chad Moreno, nieces and nephews.

  Memorial service held at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Madelia, MN, on Monday, August 5th, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. Burial to follow at Calvary Cemetery.
