Gertrude Shepard McGinness

— Gertrude Shepard McGinness, age 96, passed away Wednesday, September 4, 2013 at Oak Terrace Assisted Living Facility in North Mankato.Gertrude Shepard McGinness, age 96, passed away Wednesday, September 4, 2013 at Oak Terrace Assisted Living Facility in North Mankato.

 A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 7, at 11:00 a.m. in Lake Crystal at the First Presbyterian Church. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.

 Gertrude was born on April 23, 1917, to Jessie and Blanche (Jackson) Shepard near Gilliam, Missouri. The fourth of seven children, she attended school in Gilliam, graduating in 1935 as valedictorian of her class. Gertrude attended the University of Missouri at Columbia graduating with a degree in nursing. She met James A. McGinness while in college and they were married on August 2, 1941.

 Over the years, Gertrude was employed as Director of Student Health Services at the University of Missouri, staff nurse at the visiting nurses association in Kansas City, Missouri, and school nurse for District 77 in Mankato. In 1966 she accepted the position of Director of Public Health Services for Nicollet County. During her tenure there she established the home care program under Medicare as well as the homemaker service.

 Retiring in 1979, she became active in community and wellness projects, including teaching first care for Farm Bureau and volunteering at the Grace Thrift Shop for 11 years. Gertrude was a long time member of the Carmelite extension club and served as elder and moderator of the Presbyterian women's association in the Lake Crystal Presbyterian Church.  

 Her interests included bridge, cooking, calligraphy, word puzzles, cross-stitch, reading, and refinishing furniture.

 She is survived by sons Don (Annette) of Lake Crystal and David of Castle Rock, Colorado and sisters in law Helen and Velma Shepard, both of Cape Coral Florida. She was preceded in death by her husband Jim and siblings Jack, Charlotte, Joe, Edsel, Henrietta, and Harold.

 Memorials are preferred to the American Red Cross.
