William Chalgren M.D.

  William S. Chalgren, age 97 of North Mankato, died Saturday, September 22, 2012 at his home.

  Funeral service will be held Saturday, September 29 at     11 AM, at First Presbyterian Church in

Mankato.  A visitation will be from

4 to 7 PM at Mankato Mortuary on

Friday, September 28.  Private burial

at Glenwood Cemetery.  Memorials

preferred to Salvation Army, Leukemia

and Lymphoma Society or First

Presbyterian Church.  Mankato Mortuary

in charge of arrangements.

  Dr. William S. Chalgren and his twin sister Gertrude were born July 17, 1915 to Richard and Dorothy Chalgren, at St. Andrews Hospital in Minneapolis, MN.  He graduated from Edison High School in June 1931.  He entered the University of Minnesota in the fall of 1931.  For the next 6 years, he worked 36 to 48 hours per week in the Medical Library while taking pre-med classes.  He completed 4 years of ROTC and was commissioned a 2nd Lt. in the Infantry Reserve.  In the spring of 1937 he enrolled in the University of Minnesota Medical School.  In June 1939 he received a BA degree Cum Laude.  From 1939-1941, he was also enrolled in graduate school at Minnesota, taking courses toward a master's degree in Zoology and Physiology.  In the summer of 1940 he was employed by the state of Minnesota to conduct a survey of the Anopheline Mosquitoes of Central Minnesota.  He received his MD from the University of Minnesota in 1943.  While he was getting his PhD, he was a fellow of Neuropsychiatry at the University of Minnesota.  At the same time he was a specialist with the US Army, specializing in Neurology and Psychiatry.  William was an instructor and assistant professor in the Dept of Neuropsychiatry at the University of Minnesota.  He was a Diplomat in Psychiatry-American Board and Neurology-American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology by examination in New York.  From 1950-1992, Bill was in private practice, specializing in Neurology, Psychiatry, and Electroencephalogy, in Mankato, MN.  He was on staff at Immanuel St. Joseph's Hospital in Mankato and at the U of M hospital.  William was a consultant at the St. Peter State Hospital, Instructor at Mankato State University, school of Nursing, President and Secretary of the Blue Earth Co. Medical Society, member of the MN State Soc, Epilepsy Soc, National Multiple Sclerosis Soc, Central Electroencephalographic Soc., and a board member of the Mankato Rehab Center.  Bill was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Mankato Golf Club, and an Honorary Life Member of the Mankato Curling Club.  His hobbies included hunting, fishing, curling, traveling, and playing cards.

  William is survived by his wife, Marcia; sons, William and Robert; sister-in-law, Diane McLaughlin; 5 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; 5 nephews; 1 niece and many cousins.

  He was preceded in death by his son, James Chalgren; twin sister, Gertrude Snoeyenbos; and brother-in-law, James McLaughlin.
