Joyce Armstrong (Goettlicher) Stackhouse

Joyce Armstrong (Goettlicher) Stackhouse, age 91, of Mission, TX, died on Good Friday, March 29, 2013 in her beloved Rio Grande Valley.

Per her wish, the family will wait until the weather warms in Minnesota to return her ashes home.  A celebration of her life will be held Sunday, June 2, 2013 beginning with a graveside service at noon at Woodland Hills Memorial Park, Mankato.  The celebration will continue after the service at the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Walter H. Strand Post 950, where Joyce was an active member for many years and also a past-president of the Ladies Auxiliary.

Joyce was born February 21, 1922, in Mankato, the first of eight children born to Garth and Eva Armstrong.  The skills she learned helping to raise her siblings served her well throughout her life.   Joyce graduated from Mankato High School in 1940. Her art work graces the cover and pages of the 1940 Otaknam Yearbook. Joyce was a business and community leader, managing several womens clothing stores; the last being "Three Sisters" in the old Madison-East Mall.  She was a member of many civic organizations and active in the Holy Rosary Catholic Parish, in North Mankato where her children attended school and she and her first husband John Goettlicher raised their family.

In July 1988 Joyce married Donald R. Stackhouse and the two spent the early years of their retirement at their home on Third Crow Wing, near Park Rapids.   Joyce loved being outdoors, fishing and the sound of the Loons in the morning.  She and Don loved being winter "snowbirds" and eventually settled permanently in Mission, TX some 27 years ago where Don passed away in 2000 and Joyce remained until her death.

Joyce's faith in God was her strength and her family was her focus.  Throughout her life Joyce was mentor, mother and friend to many people both within and outside of her family circle. Her home was often a temporary haven for those in need.  In spite of the fact her children, step-children and her many grand and great-grand children were spread around the world she maintained contact, sent "care packages" and shared her wisdom with each of them right up until her death.  She lives in the hearts of all whose lives she touched and will continue to influence the world through them.

Joyce is survived by her children, Randy (Karen) Goettlicher of Dallas, TX, Mark (Susan) Goettlicher of Renton, WA, Anna Edmonds of Huntsville, AL and step daughters, Karen (Robert) Van Guilder of Spirit Lake, IA, Gayle (Russell) Lee of Mankato and Patti Stackhouse also of Spirit Lake; grandchildren and step grandchildren, Lance Goettlicher, Shane (Debbie) Goettlicher, Rowdie Goettlicher, Heidi Storhaug,  SGT Jacob (Cait) Goettlicher,  USMC, Jessica (Joseph) Ieremia, James Swainson , Rachel Whisenant, Garth Whisenant, David Van Guilder, Mary (Tom)Noah, Robert (Katie) Van Guilder,  Dustin (Trisha) Lee, James Lee and 25 great grandchildren and 1  great-great grandchild with more on the way; sisters, Eva (Vonnie) Hansen, Jean Kallos, Mary Kruse and brother, Gary Armstrong;  many nieces and nephews and her adopted family Martha, Jr, Martika, Claribeth, and Isamar Alanis.

Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Elaine Knuth and brothers John Armstrong and Dale Armstrong.

One of Joyce's passions was supporting the food bank. In lieu of flowers, a donation to your local food bank would make her smile.
