Martin Daniel John Schroeder, son of the Reverend Martin Carl Schroeder and wife Grace Daniels, was born May 8, 1927, in Portage, Wisconsin. He was baptized by his father on June 12, 1927 and confirmed his Christian faith on June 1, 1941. Martin enlisted in the military in 1945, after graduating from Bay City, MI Central High School.  He was honorably discharged from the Navy V-5 Air Corps Program after WWII ended. Martin then enrolled at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, graduating in 1949 with a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature.  He continued his education and received a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1951 and  later a Master of Arts in Education from Concordia College, River Forest, IL, in 1965.  Martin became a candidate for Doctorate in English Language and Literature at the University of Michigan in 1974.  Martin also studied at the British Museum & Library, London and the Neufelt Library in Shakespeare Centre, Stratford-upon-Avon, England in 1981, 1984, 1986, and 1990.

Martin's 43 years of service to the church ranged from teaching K-8 in a one room school to teaching high school and college English. He started his ministry at Redeemer Lutheran School, Ann Arbor, MI (1951-1956), where he was principal, teacher of 48 students in grades K-8, organist, and choir director. He then accepted a call to teach at the parish where his father was pastor, Bay City, MI (1956-1961). For 5 years, he had the honor of working alongside his father in the role of principal, upper grade teacher, choir director, and organist. Martin then accepted the call to Dr. Martin Luther College, New Ulm (1961-1992), where he taught English, including composition, grammar and Shakespeare. After his retirement, Martin continued as adjunct professor for 2 more years. During his tenure at Martin Luther College, he served as Chairman of the English Division (1975-1983) and was on the editorial board of 'The Lutheran Educator' (1988-1992).  Martin was also a church librarian, elder, choir-member and was a veteran of  the American Legion.

Martin was a strong believer in Jesus Christ and was a faithful servant in the teaching Ministry.  He met his wife and devoted partner of 60 years, Lois Elaine Sagehorn, at Concordia College, River Forest, IL, where they were both preparing to be Christian teachers. They were united in marriage on July 13, 1952, by the Rev. Herman H. Sagehorn, Lois' father, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Tilden, NE. Three sons and two daughters were born to this union.  Martin was a loving husband and a caring father.  He is survived by his loving, loyal and faithful wife, Lois; sons, Jonathan (Anne) of Saline, MI, Timothy (Joan) of New Ulm, Benjamin (Renee) of Mankato; daughter, Rebecca (Kit) Marti of Prior Lake; son-in-law, Mark Spencer of New Ulm; and 12 grandchildren.  Martin is also survived by his brother, Russell (Nancy) Schroeder of Milwaukee, WI; and sister, Gloria (Bob) Huston of Charlottesville, VA.  Martin was preceded in death by daughter, Deborah Spencer; sister, Grace Strohschein; and parents, Martin C. and Grace Daniels Schroeder.
