Carol Ann (Wolner) Wendt

— Carol Ann (Wolner) Wendt, age 74, Hutchinson, Minnesota, passed away Monday, October 21, 2013, in her home in Hutchinson. Memorial services were held Monday, October 28, 2013, at 10:30 A.M., at Peace Lutheran Church in Hutchinson, with interment in the church cemetery.

Carol Ann Wendt was born January 6, 1939, in St. James, Minnesota, to Leonard and Florence (Noren) Wolner. She was baptized as an infant and later confirmed as a youth. Carol

graduated from Mankato High School in 1957 and Mankato State College in 1961. She married Roy Wendt on August 15, 1964, in Mankato, Minnesota. They were blessed with six children Richard, Karen, Matthew, Kimberly, Stacy, and Jodi.

Carol's lifelong passions for the outdoors and for sports began at a young age. As a kid, she loved spending time at her grandparents' farm, playing with her cousins and occasionally helping her uncles with the farm work. She also loved playing softball, helping one of her Mankato teams win the state tournament in 1956.

In 1961, Carol began her professional career as a teacher at Hutchinson High School and immediately became a strong advocate for women's athletics. She founded the first girls GAA tumbling club and took great pride in leading "girls only" canoe trips to the BWCA. Carol forever treasured the enduring bonds she formed with her teaching colleagues and former students.

Carol retired from full time teaching in 1965, to focus on her greatest love, motherhood. She loved raising her family (and pets) on the shores of Belle Lake while teaching her children things such as golf, archery, swimming, water-skiing and camping. She personally remained active in various bowling leagues, bridge clubs and golf leagues, even winning the Crow River Country Club woman's club championship a few times.

As the children grew older, Carol returned to the class room on a part-time basis and quickly became known as a very reliable and sought-after substitute teacher. She loved being back working with the students and staff and took great pride in hosting her yearly thin pancake feed for the faculty.

Carol was honored to serve as the Head Woman's Golf Coach for Hutchinson High School from 1983 to 2005. She loved this job for the opportunity it gave her to positively influence the lives of her student athletes through the game of golf. In addition, her friendships with her fellow coaches and her players gave her great joy. She also achieved great personal success in leading multiple individuals and teams to the state tournament. In 2006, all of these accomplishments were recognized by Carol's induction into the State Golf Coaches Hall of Fame.

Upon retirement, Carol split her time between her home on Belle Lake and in Arizona. She remained active in golf, in various bridge clubs and in following the athletic and musical endeavors of her grandchildren.
